When I lived in a colder clime, I found that an inexpensive hydroponic garden with a "gro-light" was a great way to over-winter cuttings of basil, impatiens, and other stuff. The whole set up was about $20.

Maybe we should start another conversation about cuttings? Never did this, tried to save an entire plant over the winter with out much success. Gets leggy and dies about March:(
Maybe we should label this message propagation? Seems we have a few experts on this...

Thanks Zem! I get a lot of pleasure out of growing the cuttings and building the containers. I also get to give away loads of plants to friends and club members. It is very satisfying watching a cuttinginto a nicely shaped plant. I have way too many containers! I bring many of them indoors in the winter. I feel like I have a greenhouse environment indoors! While the snow is falling, I can enjoy colorful foliage, blooms and fragrance. I wish that I had a real conservatory, but I doubt that that will happen in this life time.
