don't you think the main point is for each of us to
actually DO something to do our parts? I don't wait for any organization to
"guide" or force my actions. I do what I can to reduce my own carbon
footprint and care for the piece of dirt I live on. I purchase from those
who provide what I believe at the time to be "earth friendly" items and
avoid those who have proven they are not. That takes no organization. That
is just being responsible.
Bonnie, I'm sure doing so makes you feel good about yourself and keeps guilt at bay, but the stewardship of this earth is a much bigger issue that can't be handled by a few recyclers and Prius drivers. For each green person doing that there are as many snowmobilers, racers of many kinds, non-recyclers, SUV-9mi-to-the-gal-and-proud-of-its, gardeners who think purple loosestrife is just SOOOOOO pretty, etc. Add to those people offsetting your good deeds we also have companies strip-mining, spewing chemicals, farmers excess fertilizer going into rivers, manufacturers who do anything and everything they can to get around having to curb their excesses, and on and on. Yet you don't think the government should make an effort toward better stewardship? Even if it's all one big false alarm, don't you think the government should set directives to help us clean up some of the mess we've made? Sorry, but there are just not enough individuals like yourself out there, making an effort on their own, to offset the damage that has been done and continues to be done.

No, Jim. Things that we think we know as fact may be completely discounted
in the future as a "miss" by new information that scientists find. Not all
scientists who believe this may or may not be a cyclical change are on the
carbon dole. I do not get my info from Fox News regarding scientific
matters. I prefer to read science magazines, PBS, check other sources
(books) and catch things on the web about items that catch my interest. And
I do watch who sponsors what study.

So while you may believe that something today is honest fact, Jim, down the
road additional information may say differently. I prefer to keep an open
mind and not think I KNOW for a fact what is a really convincing theory. I
also do not believe that others are "misguided" because they don't allow for
the possibility that current scientific thought may not be the final word.
We now know the earth is NOT flat. We now know that something fills "empty"
spaces in the universe (dark matter.) The theory of relativity and the
previous laws of gravity are currently under suspicion right now. Who knows
what else will be learned when more information about our planet is known?

Regardless whether we disagree on who is right about why the climate is
"different" or changing, don't you think the main point is for each of us to

Didn't think I was offering an opinion. Unlike the carbon industry
apologists on Fox News, I don't have opinions that weasel demonstrable fact.
I do have opinions about Fox News, its viewers, and its distortion of
reality, however. Was that what you meant?

There are no credible scientists who disagree; most of the toads paid
by the carbon industries have been outed. The new propaganda line is
that it's not as urgent as portrayed and we can fix it through
"voluntary" actions--I suppose through councils of church elders,
PTAs, and local tribal warlords.

There was a letter to the editor in today's paper about how it is a
load of c**p, citing some  scientist that disagrees.  But you have to
realize this is heavily Republican country here.  Did you read Roger
Ebert's review?  4 stars and he wrote that he believes everyone
should see it, that it is very well laid out and solidly backed by
facts and quite riveting.  He said that if you choose not to see it
you'd better have a good excuse to give your kids someday.

Have you all seen Al Gore's movie, 'An Inconvenient Truth?'  If you
have not seen it yet, you should.  Our current unusual weather
patterns are completely explained along with what we can all do to
turn the problem around.
The movie
ought to be required in every high school in the nation (IMHO)
because they are the people who will be most affected in the
foreseeable future.
