Because that's when the star Sirius (the Dog Star) rises and sets w/ the sun
and in ancient times, they thought it threw off enough heat to make it
hotter. Sirius is the brightest star (magnitude-wise) in the heavens. He's
the "dog" that follows the hunter Orion. If you look just to the left and
below the constellation Orion (best seen here in the winter) you can see it
very clearly. Sorry, probably more than you wanted to know.
