Interesting, Barb. No idea, then, what it could be. They are used in many situations here--sun, partial shade, with other plants, by themselves, under irrigation, in xeriscape plantings. The only common threads through those site--that I can see--are sandy soil and temperature range, unless I'm missing something. By sandy soil, I mean excellent drainage; not sure desert sandy soil meets that description, so if they thrive at Boyce Thompson, drainage may not be a factor.

Buddleia do well here. So it must be dry heat rather than humid heat that they don't like. They grow, and bloom, but you would not call them lush. The blooms are maybe half as big as I've seen in northern California where the summers aren't so hot. I don't think so Kitty. I have a friend that grew one, of course I can't recall the cultivar now. It was a silvery/lavender color. She grew it against the hottest, driest part of the house, never watered it, and it was probably 8 feet tall when she moved. Bloomed constantly. She's trying some at her new place which has the same type of dry sandy soil as her old place so we'll see how it goes. Andrea, I wonder if your Buddleia problems have to do with heat zones?

I gave up on it. My soil is too wet I guess. Mine never did much of
anything and then pooped out a couple of years ago. Didn't feel like
messing with it again. Same with Buddleia. I don't know HOW people
get those things to do well. Not one single plant that I've ever
gotten, and there have been quite a few, have made it through an
entire season. I've tried them in different types of soils, no
water, lots of water, some water, no luck. And at different houses,
so I know it's not just this
yard.Andrea H Beaufort, SC[Original Message]

I've had one since last summer, but it has grown poorly (why I
have no
idea) and so no suckers or seedlings here. I will keep an eye on it
though, given your experience.
