Towel is a good idea. Pick up by scruff of neck as mother cat would, and then use the opposite arm / armpit to hold the rear of the cat against your body while keeping firm hand on scruff. This will give you two points of control!

I don't even know how to pick it up without being clawed to death. I
normally cradle a dog with my forearm between its front legs and the

We've got a small crate ready. The big crate is still outside since we
