Re: critters > fence ideas

Urica dioica? It can grow up to 3 feet tall in moist, shady spots. Sounds good. Hmmm. seedlings would get trampled before they could do any good. I'd have to cultivate good sized ones and then put them out there. The ones riding their bikes through would never know what hit 'em! I am concerned though that it would self sow into my garden. What do you think? ;+)

Aren't stinging nettles shade plants? I remember as a kid hooking up with some in Cranboork [BC].

The orange requires full sun. The mahonia, M bealei, is full sun to light shade. The Eleutherococcus I mentioned has thorns and takes part to full shade and I have an opportunity for several so I might create a hedge in front of the the privacy fence. If you're not familiar with it:

How about Poncirus trifoliata, Japanese Bitter Orange? Ornamental and vicious. <g>

If leatherleaf mahonia will grow there, that is the sharpest, pickiest
stuff. I planted one between me and the imbeciles next door to stop the
foot traffic.
