After the hassles I had getting my kitchen done (some of you may remember that torturous 8 month saga), I was prepared to stand up for myself with contractors, but didn't expect a problem with Owen.. He is a perfectionist and does beautiful work. I did stand my ground and he feels terrible about it and would change it if he could but I knew before he said it that trying to fix it would make it worse.
It is beautiful, the color is rich and gives the room a classic look. I just didn't want red. However, in trying to find a positive side to all this, I realize that the color will blend better with my wall units which are red oak. The wall units have a hint of red, not nearly what this red maple stain is, but they are red enough that it's noticeably different from the golden oak stain in my kitchen. So maybe there is a silver lining.
And since he knows he messed up, I feel he'll make a strong effort to make sure everything else goes well. The custom shades arrived today, maybe he'll put them up for me....

Well I doubt I would stand there and yell at the person, but I do think I would let them know I wasn't happy, I expected what I contracted for, and want to know what options there are to fix the problem. Depending on the options, would depend on what I said next. But I definately wouldn't just say, ok, fine and pay the bill.... I think I've seen my husband complain exactly once. If I'm unhappy I ask myself if I have gotten what I've paid for and have I been treated politely, and if I complain I am always polite myself, but still it is a difficult thing for most of us (which is why businesses get away with the kind of things they do). The only way to make this right is to replace the $1000 patio door, the oak entry door, and $250 worth of woodwork. I had told him specifically about the stain color, but when it came tothe tile grout color I told him to pick it. Instead he brought me color samples on the grout and thought I had left it to him todo what he felt right on the stain. So he says, but he knows that's not true. The stain color is written in an email. kitty neIN, Zone 5 ----- Original Message ----- From: "Donna" <gossiper@sbcglobal.net> To: <gardenchat@hort.net> Sent: Thursday, June 28, 2007 8:05 PM Subject: Re: [CHAT] woe woe woe my boatwell now, you both are much better folks than I would be. I came home tonight to RED MAPLE. I nearly cried. Minwax doesn'tmakegolden oak in GEL stain which is needed for the fiberglass. Hedoesn'tlike other brands so he chose the red maple because that's whatthey'reputting in all the new homes and it looks so rich and beautiful. Butitis RED. That's the color they used in the 60s when this place wasbuiltand I've lived with it for over 20 yrs. I wanted the more neutralshadeI used when I had my kitchen done a few years ago. It can't be fixed w/out making it very dark and even then thefiberglasswouldn't match the rest so I just have to live with it. I know hemeantwell, but...
