No butterflies yet. Hummingbirds are scarce in our area, but I have a few that have been consistently visiting one of my two feeders. Friends in our area agree that so far they haven't been around. I always try to plant dill in a pot on my deck for the black swallowtails to lay their eggs, but the evil squirrels keep digging looking for the nuts that they imagine they buried. Just replanted the seeds. So far, they have not disturbed the pot near by planted with basil. Go figure. I like herbs on my deck so I can easily harvest for culinary purposes.

Maybe I’m just not very observant but after all, I’m looking down a lot –digging, weeding, planting, mulching – but I saw my first butterfly today. It was my yellow swallowtail showing up to her host plant, Zizia (Golden Alexanders) which is in full bloom now. Always makes me smile.
The weather is fantastic, 68°F, blue skies and a light breeze. Just planted a bed of 7 different Baptisias with several other lower plants between them as it’s going to take several years for the Bs to establish. Took me longer than I thought, but then everything seems to take longer to accomplish these days.
So, anything you’d care to share?
