The worst thing about the big box stores is the lack of education where the clerks are concerned -- and the lack of caring by many of the employees. It makes me realize I'm good at what I do. I keep a notebook on me at all times to note requests from customers. I check that book every time we get a plant delivery and immediately call everybody when their requests arrive. I've even been know to set aside choice plants for good customers when they can't get to the store immediately. I also don't have any qualms about letting people know where they can get things we don't carry. I know a lot of people through garden groups I belong to so I want to at least give the appearance that we are a cut above the rest. My manager is very pleased with what I've accomplished. I don't have anywhere near the discipline to do what you do.

Since I now find myself with almost nothing with which to stock my little nursery (though I do have some things that need digging) I headed over to HD as they are advertising $2 quart perennials. I had to drive clear to the other side of town because they closed ours. I couldn't find any; asked the clerk. She said that they were sold out and they can't get anyone at corporate to answer their call about how to get more.
I needed a few things at Menards so, while there, I checked theirs. They had lowered the price on their quarts to $2, probably in response to HD's ad. I picked up 20. I was tickled to see that they had an Epimedium. You don't usually come across Epis in big box stores IME. Also found some Allium cernuum, which I've always wanted to try. Also got some Little Bluestem, Carex Frosted Curls, Geum, Penstemon, etc. I picked up a Paprika Yarrow, too. I don't like Yarrow but shoppers here seem to crave the weed.

Kitty, I couldn't agree more. The garden center at THD has been much busier 
than it was last year.  We can't keep plants in stock!  This year we are
getting lots of items from my friend's nursery here in La Grange -- Brown
Turkey figs, native honey suckle, scented geraniums, and others.  Most of
the other shrubs and annuals are grown in Tennessee, too.  I know people
like to get locally grown plants, and I'm sure yours are outstanding.  I
knew your reputation would get around.  Congratulations!!!

....has rebounded.  At least here it seems to have.
All year I was unable to take my vacation time, office was too hectic. I ended up taking almost every afternoon off in March to get it in before my 
anniversary date.  March was so deliciously superb that I got a ton of
stuff potted - and more in April - together with what I'd potted last fall 
and some items I'd ordered.  I ended up with well over 800 pots for my
spring plant sale. I had to take 2 days off just to set it up. It's a 2 day association garage sale and rain was looming but it looked like Friday 
would be safe.  Still, I thought I'd end up stuck with half my stock and
have to lug it back into the backyard.

Word got out and the eager buyers swooped in at 6:45am Friday.  They
picked me clean - even the seedlings and cuttings still in the backyard
that I was holding over for use in my August sale. Everything gone. Fast, very fast. People were grabbing things I hadn't even tagged yet because I 
thought I'd get to them for Saturday.  People that showed up after work
wondered where the sale was. I had to apologize profusely; this has never 
happened before. And then there's tomorrow.  Geez, I hope it rains so I
don't have to face them.

I think people are ready to shop.  At least for plants they are.
