Cathy, that is probably Peteria (sp?).
Pam, depends on the conditions and the variety.  It does not like to be wet 
and 2 winters ago we had everything including ice under snow which lasted along 
time.  I knew when I purchased the variegated that chances would be slim for 
it to survive but I have this weakness for variegated foliage.
