I agree with Lee's suggestion to use drip irrigation, and I've used it for
years. Because I am a modified SQ. FT gardener--modified for larger spaces
and by my own years of experience--I could not use a permanent drip
irrigation systems. I moved plants about too much. So I invested in a
number of 50-foot black soaker hoses from Wal-mart for $7 each. I snake
them through the veggie beds, rose beds and among the perennials. What
makes them work best is that I cover the hoses with mulch--an inch to two
inches of it. In hot climates like Texas, the mulch reduced evaporation to
almost nothing. Elsewhere, the mulch cover satisfies my esthetic concerns.

On a personal note, the first crocus FINALLY bloomed today! Hooray, spring
is finally here.
