Ellen,
At our house, my husband and I have a back driveway (which goes to the kitchen and which, naturally, everybody uses) and a front, formal driveway (which goes to the formal entrance, and which nobody ever uses). Over the years the front gravel driveway became weedy, from non-use.We were reluctant to use weedkillers on it since there are a number of old oaks very nearby, so instead, we mowed it. Eventually as the years passed, grass supplanted the weeds. We continue to mow the driveway, and it looks very nice. It can still be and occasionally is used as a driveway -- after all, the gravel base is still there -- but it has a cool green look which we really like.
So, for all of you who don't want to use weedkillers and don't have time to hand weed your gravel driveway, maybe this is a solution you might want to think about -- sowing some type of grass in it and mowing it. Just a thought!
Lina
