Re: native plants

Gloria,

I believe native and indiginous mean the same thing and, as generally used by native plant societies, refer to plants which were on this continent prior to the arrival of Europeans. This is in comparison to naturalized plants, which are plants which were brought to this continent from elsewhere.

That being said, however, one really does need to be more specific. For example, In my particular area of Virginia, only one trillium, Trillium sessile, is native. Just one hour away, however, the magnificent Trillium grandiflorum is native. If I purchased a nursery-raised T. grandiflorum and planted it in my environment, I would have introduced an exotic plant, not a native plant, to that environment, since it is not native to this specific area, primarily because of geographic differences between the two areas. And, technically, if this same T. grandiflorum loved my environment and spread into a large colony, and from our property to that of our neighbors, and over the years throughout the area, it could, conceivably, be called a "naturalized" plant, since it is an exotic introduced into the area which has settled in for the long haul. Thus, a naturalized plant can be, not just a plant brought from some other continent to this one, but one brought from some other place on this continent to some other place on this continent, where it made itself at home.

This may be splitting hairs -- probably is -- but in the native plant world, people do tend to be a bit specific about these differences.

If anybody is interested in further exploring the subject, Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia all have native plant societies which may offer more help. The address of the Virginia Native Plant Society is www.vnps.org.  And, yes, we're in the middle of our spring hikes right now and loving it -- ticks and all! Even saw a bald eagle nest with an eagle on it today -- first time ever! What a thrill!
