Public Relations Rant Warning

<begin rant>

Let me set the stage - I'm a garden writer - 60 newspapers, 7 books etc etc.
My Net connection is a dial-up modem. I'm 20+ miles from the switch and
it's slow. While I'm connected, nobody is ever going to accuse me of
blazing Net speed. ;-)

I need a continuing flow of information from the trade about what you guys
are doing. You want me to cover/write about what you are doing so that my
million plus weekly readers get some information about your products. So
far, so good. We both want to work together.

It's my job to write about gardening in an entertaining and informative
manner.
It's your job to let me know of your products.

More and more producers are sending me humongeous email files complete with
pictures, animated singing canaries - you name it and I've received
it. These huge files clog up my email server and hang my system. I have
to manually go into the server to delete those large files and when I have
to do that before I've finished my morning coffee, I'm a little less than
reasonable about having to do so.

Let me suggest that you simply send me an email with your story highlights
and a clickable url so that if I need to see the gorgeous photo of your new
packaging or new plant, I can go there and take a look. If I need to use
that gorgeous photo - you can give me permission to download it (I know
how) and send it to my papers. But, you really don't want to take up the
bandwidth to send me a publication quality photograph through the
email. Holy clog-up batman!

If you think I need a photograph, then send me one through the snail mail
but not - if you want it published - through the email.

I get well over 100 emails a day and I don't have the bandwidth or patience
to deal with huge files. Give us both a break - keep those emails short,
simple and to the point without graphics or html.

It's basic commonsense pr on your part. Don't do anything that will get in
the way of your real message.
