Vinegar is 5% acetic acid (primarily - actually contains a number of acids...) and acetic acid is a non-specific contact
herbicide. The commercial 18% (?) vinegar would be good directly for tough weeds and the 5% would be good for young soft
annual weeds.
Malcom Beck of Garden-Ville in Texas (http://www.garden-ville.com/) mixed concentrated acetic acid with an equal amount of
molasses and found it was good for tough weeds at a 1:2 dilution with water and 1:6 dilution for soft weeds. He sold it for a
while as organic weed control (not now, he is re working it). If you add a little soap and some orange oil it improves its
effectiveness.
You need to spray to cover the plants, and for tough plants you may need to spray several times a month apart.
The molasses serves to decrease the volatility of the acetic acid and helps stick it to the plant. The acetic acid and
molasses break down to feed the soil microbes.
