Strong vinegar will kill weeds, yes, at least in Texas. We spray or pour it
on the target plants during the hottest part of the day, and watch them
shrivel up and die. I don't know how effective it will be where the sun's
rays are not so cooperative. It works especially well at killing grasses and
weeds in cracks in concrete drives and walkways.
Here are the caveats:
Most grocery-store vinegars are only 6% acidity and so are not terribly
effective. They may kill off top growth without taking out the roots. But we
can often find 10% vinegar at farm stores or nurseries in Texas, and that
works quite well indeed.
Personally, I believe that the 20% type you sometimes find is too strong an
acid to recommend for homeowners to use. It can be dangerous.
Vinegar is a NONSPECIFIC herbicide. It will kill lots of other plants
besides weeds. So it must be used with as much care as any other herbicide.
