Re: Seed swaps

Barry Webb, There is no doubt that invasive organisms are a very serious
problem. Here in the northeastern United States we have accidental and
deliberate introductions which a few of us try to control, but ninety-nine
and forty-four one-hundredths of the population doesn't even see, let alone
recognize as ubiquitous and spreading.
I think there have been attempts to weaken some of the restrictions in USA
restrictions, but most of the impetus for the recent strengthening of the
laws in the USA is G. Bush's war on terrorism.
It might turn out to be a help to small scale nurserymen who are willing to
go through the hoops to bring in new cultivars and then propagate them. It
seems to me that the number of small retail operations has grown lately and
garden writers who have large audiences should mention those more, even if it
is handled with SASE.
