"The judges were genuinely enthused that the best works rose to the top
and gained the appropriate award recognition," explained Ms. Virag, who
chaired a panel of 21 judges from around the country representing
different segments of the lawn and garden industry.
Here's how the judges awarded the Garden Globes:
Working in category teams (writing, photography, etc.) and using an
objective point system, judges evaluated 337 initial award entries for
accuracy of information, ability to communicate, content, organization,
style and originality. Some 55 entries placing in the top 10% of this
non-competitive stage received the Garden Globe Award of Achievement and
became semi-finalists for the Garden Globe Award of the Year.
The second round of judging was competitive. From the Award of
Achievement recipients, the judges, as a group, evaluated talent (all
writing, all photography, all on-air personality, etc.) and product
(books, magazines, newspapers, calendars, etc.) entries. Ten entries
received a Garden Globe Award for Best Talent or Product.
Each "Best Talent or Product" award now becomes a finalist for the
Garden Globe Award of the Year, the highest honor bestowed on a
horticultural communicator. This award will be announced at the 54th
GWAA Symposium in Seattle August 5, 2002.
GWAA is an international organization of more than 1,800 professional
communicators in the $50 billion lawn and garden industry.
