My newspaper started up an "Extra" edition that was sent out to
non-subscribers. It was a weekly synopsis of the more important community news
and a reprinting of the better columnists' articles. (Of course the latter
comment is my take on it.) I asked one of the reporters how I should
handle this second-rights issue because I didn't want to lose the column. I
never did receive a response but subsequent "Extra"s now have an addendum to the
byline- "originally printed in ______."
So I guess to add to Andrew's query- If you sell a freelance column with
the understanding that you are granting/acceding first rights, does a second
printing by the original purchaser still fall under first rights?
