Re: Brooding about relationships in the industry
C.L.,
I'm with you and Andrew on knowing and growing before you write about it.
Here in the horribly humid South, most unsprayed Roses look awful except for
the spring and fall flush. The much touted Flower Carpet Roses were such
dogs here that had I not received a sample plant of 'KnockOut' Rose at the
GWAA conference a few years ago, I probably would have ignored it as so much
hype. In my garden, despite unprecedented heavy rainfall over the last
year+, it's gorgeous. Hardly a mark on the rich, dark green leaves, and it's
full of bud and bloom.
The Meidillands that I'm caring for for the local MG sale have loads of
black spot. Even Rosa mutabilis has more than its share. I'm definitely
singing the praises of 'KnockOut'.
(OT - Does anyone have experience with its sibs? Please let me know off-line
or on the GardenWriters on Gardening list. )

"First bias- I never write about a plant that I haven't seen in situ or
grown
myself no matter how glowing the press release and testimonials."
Amen, Andrew! I am reminded of the year when Flower Carpet roses came
out - I would read the press releases about what a diesese-free rose
this was, then go into the garden center and unload a truck filled with
Flower Carpet roses that arrived fully infected with blackspot.
Am I influenced by a prompt response from a source? Absolutely. I am even
more influenced when someone allows me to try the plant/product so
that I can speak and write from experience, and the greater the experience
the more likely I am to report it. When Simply Beautiful sends me six of
each plant to try, I can place those plants in a garden setting, and take
photos that are way more impressive than a shot of one plant in a pot. Am I
more likely to use those photos for my articles/presentations/website?
Sure. Generosity breeds generosity.
C.L.
