Re: food gardening up or down? - Farmers Market

This food gardening discussion raises the question as to why does home
gardening have to be an issue of the profitable bottom line to be
worthwhile. Isn't raising our children to have the experience of seeing
vegetables grow, knowing you are eating fresh food, and growing not for
subsistence but because you really enjoy, arugula, leeks, fresh new
potatoes and peas, herbs and fresh cut flowers...We don't measure the
costs so carefully when considering many of our other plantings, nor do
I think we should. The pleasure and beauty we derive and create in a
garden has inestimable value.
Here in Western Oregon CSA seems to be gaining favor with many people
and the local growers, most whom also sell at the Farmer's Markets find
it works for them. I saw an interesting film about a family farm in
Northern Illinois that managed to stay financially afloat by developing
a CSA business. The name was The Real Dirt On Farmer John.
