Re: Voice Recognition Systems

Lina (and all)

Over the years I've tried several versions of Dragon Fly Naturally Speaking
and the reviews of the latest version is pretty impressive. I wasn't
impressed with the earlier versions because it didn't do too well with plant names,
botanical nomenclature and at 95% accuracy that would mean ten to fifteen
errors per page that I'd have to catch then go back and correct. The program
does learn from its mistakes though and with some patience and training the
accuracy gets better and better.

A couple of technical points: The dictation should always be done in the
same location as acoustics can play havoc on the program. A computer with as
fast a processor as possible is also helpful as is a really good microphone or
headset.

Another reason why I don't use the program is that typing slows down my
thought process and seems to make me think more about my words. On the other
hand I'm not too fond of my stream of consciousness writing as it seems to lend
towards rambling and inefficient use of words.

Someday I'll be in the same predicament though as each spring when I bring
out the pruner and lopers my wrists suffer. But, for now, my typing still
serves me well even though I still can't spel.
