Re: TV-friendly gardening clothes
I did a TV gardening spot on our local NBC affilatie for five years. I
started in early spring and choose to wear a classic English style
dark green wax jacket. Dirt and water rolls off the material. The
older these coats get the better they look. Mine are about 20 years
old. And they look like a gardening jacket. For indoor and summer
shoots I bought several men's Oxford cloth button down shirts in pink
and light blue from a Brook's Brothers outlet. Their material washes
like a dream and has a nice drape. I choose a size that was loose
fitting - it hid a multitude of sins and is easy to move around in.
I paired the shirts with blue slacks or jeans. I did a bit of homework
and checked out all the gardening programs on the air and at that
time. Martha was the queen of the screen and that's pretty much what
she wore for her garden spots.
Yes the outfit was simple, but it was comfortable, it alway looked
good and it was believeable. Also, by choosing the uniform look I did
not have to worry about what I would be wearing week after week. I
wanted folks to focus on what I was doing not what I was wearing.
Today I do alot of public speaking. Mostly at garden centers (I've
done as many as 5 talks in 2 days.) I wear a simiar outfit except I
turned in my Oxford cloth for a blue chambray number embroidered in a
blue flower motif. It's subtle but a little dressier. Since I'm not
digging in the dirt I do bling up a but with a couple of bracelets.
I'm partial to beads and Brighton.
As for makeup, I've been using the Bare Minerals collection for
several months and I think it could stand the test of high def. With
this stuff you can color up and still look natural.
Whether in the garden or on the stage Garden Grips shoes are the best.
