I'd also suggest offering Gannett an alternative contract. The company might 
be persuaded to have a different agreement if the freelancer is well-known 
and has a strong following among the readers.

That was my case when Gannett bought The Indianapolis Star last year. Took 
awhile, but I negotiated something other than what they offered me in the 
beginning.

Also, if you are a member of Garden Writers (GWAA), an attorney is available 
to offer advice as well as a model contract that is author focused.
