These easy answer--DON'T do it!

That glib throw-away aside, you're in a spot many of us have been in. Most
of us will see a contract like this soon if we haven't already. It's the
publisher's way of handling Tasini and making matters clear for themselves.
I've turned down a similar contract to the one you described, got one story
out of the publisher under our old terms, and haven't written for them
since. I don't rely on this publisher for my livelihood so the stake for me
was not great, but as more newspapers and magazines adopt the technique,
things will get tougher.

Banding together, as some suggest, could make a statement--but will more
likely open the field for others who'd like to do what we're trying to do.
This has to be the hardest issue facing freelancers today.
