We all hope not, and if my experience at the boxes (I occasionally snoop
around to see how things are being cared for) was any indication, the local
specialty nurseries are in no trouble at all. Stock at all three of the
named sources above (and another that shouldn't be too hard to add to the
list) was in a pitiful state. Most was so bone dry that a solid watering
wouldn't even rehydrate the potting media. Trees, even in large containers,
were crisped. Help was non-existant so I couldn't even tell if there was a
person on presmises that knew a hosta from a rose. The sorriest thing was
that people were still looking at these pathetic plants-cum-compost.The
general big-box rule that you have to buy the day the plants come off the
truck, still holds. I was embarrassed for them.

By contrast the indedpendents in the area still have a selection of healthy
plants and helpful, if not always knowledgeable help.We can all help by
keeping them in business...
