[GWL]: Hortus, nursery trends

According to an Associated Press item that ran in today's San Diego
Union-Tribune, "Hortus, one of Southern California's destination nurseries,
with locations in Pasadena and Orange, has closed its doors. Poor financial
management and a downturn in garden sales were blamed."
As writer-researchers, we've lost a significant resource. Hortus won a
Quill & Trowel award for its newsletter; representatives from Hortus met many
of us in Philadelphia last year; and according to the AP, Hortus "had almost
a cult following among green thumbs who flocked to its classes and events and
scoured its collection of unusual, hard-to-find roses and other perennials."
But this line from the AP is even more chilling: "High-end nurseries have
been especially vulnerable as gardeners look for cheaper souces for plants,
fertilizer and other gardening needs." Does this mean Home Depot, Target,
Wal-Mart and similar retailers with "garden departments" are the nurseries of
the future?
I'd be interested in hearing the opinions of other garden writers on
this, and whether you've seen specialty nurseries in your areas similarly
impacted by consumer trends (and therefore, by uneducated consumers -- which
is OUR job!)
