Re: [GWL]: Country Living Magazine
It's a given, but one that bears occasional repeating, that all magazines and
newspapers are in the business of selling advertising space. The writer's
job is to provide the bait that draws the reader's eye to the pages whereon
the ads are displayed. We're chum.
Newspaper editors have a particularly endearing term for where our stuff
goes: The newshole. That's the space that's left to fill after the ads are
laid out.
This sounds a lot more cynical than intended. And it doesn't mean that we
have leave to provide chum-quality prose; quite the contrary.
