Lon et al -

If quality is absolutely no concern, use a $9 disposable. But what if you
stumble cross the shot of a lifetime or simply find a great subject suitable
for publication? You're out of luck. If you've ever seem a good, sharp
photograph, you'll be disappointed in the disposables. Their plastic lenses
make photo memories like my memory -- a little fuzzy at times.

A couple of general tips - to travel light, you can get a decent
point-and-shoot 35 from Nikon, Canon, Fuji or Minolta for under $100. Buy
slow speed film -- exposure index of 50 or 100 -- the scanning machines will
not hurt slow speed film. 800 or 1000 speed film will be fogged, as will
infra-red or any film that you intend to expose at 800 or higher then push
process. Before your trip, take all of your film out of the boxes and
canisters. Carry them in a clear plastic baggie and ask for hand inspection
at the security gate. By law they are required to hand inspect if asked, but
not all inspectors will comply. Your slow speed film should go through just
fine anyway. If you have high speed film, politely insist on hand
inspection. If the security agent refuses, you can ask for a supervisor, in
which case you may miss your flight. Your best bet is to use slow speed
film. Another option which I have done is buy film at your destination then
FedEx it home to yourself or to a photo processing center (private carriers
do not scan, as far as I know).

Lastly, do NOT put your camera equipment in checked luggage. Luggage is
scanned with higher powered scanners that will ruin any film.

I hope this helps you have a smooth trip and excellent photos from it.
