Re: magazine readership/nursery catalogs
Well, Sally
I have many favorites for differing reasons and look forward to each
late winter so I can sit and read, make plans for my gardens. Mostly just to
be entertained during the "off" gardening months.
First on my list for sheer entertainment is Tony Avent's catalog from
Plants Delight nursery. That man has a sense of humor, but it does not cover
his background of sound plant and garden knowledge. he is an even better
speaker. Like a fundamentalist baptist preacher from the 50's ... only this
time it is plants and not religion... although sometimes I think plants may
have become our 'religion'.
Dan Hinkly and Herronswood is there for amazement power... I am a
collector at heart, but this one gone on and on for ever with yet another
species that I never heard of.... Wish he gave more details on prep for the
plants, but I supposed that if he did the catalog would be about the size of
Hortus III.
My source is fairly specific... I am a collector of shade loving
perennials, so I order every catalog I become aware of that would carry
something of interest to me. Both wholesale and retail. Just staying aware
and focused.........

reference that describes catalogs. Using Andersen Horticultural Library's
online PlantInfo I can link to a nursery web site by plant name, but the
small nurseries don't always have detailed web sites. As a member of GWA I
get some through mailings. And there are magazine and newspaper articles
that point to seed and plant sources. Do you have a source for discovering
interesting catalogs?
