Dear Roger,
I agree that rates are all over the map. $1.00 a word seems to be the most common, but the other consideration is--what are you selling? A magazine could pay up to $2.50 a word and take ALL RIGHTS. Or less, and you sell just first North American Serial Rights. It does make a difference, depending on what you want to do with the material in the future. If it is so specific to that magazine that you don't mind never being paid for them to use it again (and again), then you won't mind selling all rights. If this might be part of a future book for you, you would want to sell only first NA serial rights and perhaps an online use.
The rather harsh rule in negotiations is that the first person who names the price loses. Getting them to tell you their rates is important, as is defining exactly what you are selling.
Good luck,
Mary-Kate Mackey
