Thanks, Gene and Carol, for your replies. The
editor in question is proposing a lump sum that will work out to $0.50 a word
which I suppose isn't so bad in the current economy. If I'm hesitating,
it's because the writing of the article is just part of the work involved.
As mentioned before, I've already spent a couple of hours writing the initial
query and exchanging upwards of 15 e-mails with them to finally get the
go-ahead. Plus, they'll be sending out a photographer for pictures to go
with the story which will also take a couple hours of my time. The
proposed rate seems quite low to me placed in the larger context.
