I think that is the key, Duane. Having permission, at least implied
permission like you experienced at Monticello, is important. If you will
contact a key person or at least a garden supervisor and present your
credentials, you may be given more than permission - perhaps an invitation
or doors opened to restricted areas.
So, ask and you shall receive.
