Re: echinacea
Good advice from Tony Avent in Helen Yost's blog. I'll take it a step
further.
I, too, lost my echinacea until I had this conversation with Dan Heims, who
clones numerous echinacea for market.
He told me to remove all flower buds, don't let them flower or grow stalks,
for the first year in the ground. The plant puts its energy into growing an
extensive root system. I also mulch my new coneflowers with at least six
inches of shredded leaves in the fall, because our winters will produce -28F
to -30F nights and usually a January thaw. Echinacea planted this way
thrive in my garden.
