RE: [GWL]: Taking photos

Title: Taking photos
Question -- I am asked more and more often to give talks on various topics which I am happy to oblige but I scramble around for visual images.  I am most impressed when I see someone give a talk and they have the exact right visual images (usually slides) to illustrate their points, even though the slides were taken ten years earlier on a trip to who knows where and ages before the person ever expected to give a talk on that topic.

So how do you manage to take photos in anticipation that some day, you might want to give a talk on something.

This is particularly of interest to me right now as my SO and I are planning a trip to Italy in late Spring and I want to optimize my garden visits.  How do I think about photos???

Nan,
My photo-journalism professor in college taught me two things I'll never forget. In a pinch, use your camera as a weapon to defend yourself AND film is your cheapest investment--shoot lots.

If I was going to Italy (lucky dog) I'd plan on shooting at least three rolls of thirty-six exposure slide film a day. Shoot high, shoot low, shoot wide angle, shoot close-up, shoot plants, gardens, fountains, buildings, people, everything, JUST SHOOT.

The people you're talking about (I'm on my way. I illustrate a six week perennial gardening class with my own slides) just have a library of hundreds, thousands of slides--all organized so that they are easily retrievable for a given subject. I'm still using slides shot nearly 25 years ago--although I'm shooting more now than ever (but not as much as I'd like).
