Re: [GWL]: Taking photos

Nan,
When I visit a city, I start with taking a couple slides of the major
landmark of the area. When in Toronto, I did the needle and Lake Ontario
waterfront; in Boston, I took the skyline from offshore on a boat; same
thing in San Diego and Trafalgar Square and the guards at Buckingham Palace
in London. I use these slides as an introduction or transition when
shifting locations. It helps orient the viewer and gives context to the
presentation. I feel strongly that landscape and architectural shots should
be included. Also, if I go to a well-known botanical garden, I look at what
slides they have for sale in the gift shop. These usually cover the most
important aspects of the garden--ones the average person will want to see.
Then I weave my own macro shots of various plants into these overviews.
I've been know to buy the slides rather than take the time to shoot them.
Most botanical gardens have a good selection for PR purposes and will give
you dupes for free or for a nominal charge--if they are not sold in the gift
shop. Of course, if a garden has a specialty collection, you will want to
shoot plenty of macros of various cultivars, plus some overviews.

And, don't forget the quirky and touching. If you see something charming
such as a toddler blowing bubbles or an oxcart laden with clay pots, take
these shots and insert them. Audiences love something unexpected to break
up the botanical stuff.
