Re: [GWL]: Gifts for Gardeners

I wrote a column a few years ago recommending Tracy DiSabato-Aust's
"Well-Tended Perennial Garden," and book stores sold out within 5 minutes
after opening. That's understandable because not even Barnes & Noble
stocks a lot of copies of any one book. A gift I recommended and gave has
received a lot of attention, though.

I've been writing a weekly garden column for 8 years. Prior to that, I was
one of three rotating columnists for the Boise daily newspaper. I asked one
of the other columnists what his favorite garden tool was, and he said it
was a Japanese farmers' knife, but they were hard to find. I bought one by
mail order for my husband, and he loved it. I hefted it and did not love
it. It was clumsy in my hand. A friend did a lot of supportive computer
work for me, and I gave him garden tools-- a ss transplant shovel and ss
spading fork from Lee Valley, and later I gave him a Japanese farmers
knife. (He would not accept pay) The day I gave him the farmers' knife,
he took it home and wore the black coating off before that first evening.
He said he doesn't go out to garden now without it. The area of town in
which he lives is older, and he said you can't stick a trowel in the ground
without fighting roots. This knife just slices through the roots. Now
he's looking for one for his wife. She's evidently tried it, and I've
talked to a number of women who garden who are also crazy about that
tool. Margaret Lauterbach
