[GWL]: Garden Catalogs

Catalogues....hey, isn't that one of the best things about being a
garden writer? Especially when you're working for a larger publishing
company and can charge all the phone bills to them. My filing boxes are full
of catalogues and as each is best for something, it's hard to recommend
favorites.

Stokes - natch, a favorite of many. Mine because of the fantastic
germinating instructions I've relied upon through 16 years in
the nursery business.

Vesey's - Hey, what can I say? They are from my neck of the woods.
But also because of the savvy manipulation of John Barrett, their
Sales & Marketing guy. This company is now becoming a household name
across Canada and even into the U.S. Two years ago they added bulbs
at hard-to-beat prices, this season they've added roses and shrubs.
Great catalogue and newly revised website www.veseys.com

Gaze Seed - A seed company in Newfoundland? It's got to be hardy
stock, right? 800.972.7333 Flower & Veggie seeds, On site: dahlias,
evergreens, Floribunda, Hybrid tea and climbers (ahem, not guaranteed
over winter), shade trees. Plus pesticides, tools, aquariums,
and..... hamster supplies :-)

The Perennial Gardens - recommended to me by several on the East
Coast Gardener listserve, this catalogue knocked my socks off with
its collection of plants. As they say, "From Acanthus to Zingiber".
Betcha they have the one you are looking for. Plants shipped bare
root. Sixty pages, no pix, few line drawings, averaging 24 varieties
per page. Those who have ordered from them have sung their praises
....and that's from one coast to the other folks.

and let's not forget Seeds of Diversity
It costs $25 for members to belong, but where else can you choose
from over 650 varieties of tomatoes, 250 varieties of beans and 75
varieties of peppers - all heritage at that?

I could go on and on...
