Re: [GWL]: Garden Catalogs

There's a world of nurseries out there, far surpassing White Flower
Farm in variety, reasonable cost and service if not glossy pix..many
with a web presence, so you can choose to get a hardcopy or order
online:

If you don't know Tony Avent's Plant Delights, it's a must. Not only
is Tony a superb plantsman, offering unusual plants, but he's got one
of the wickedest senses of humor going...his catalog is a hoot for
the serious gardener....10 stamps or a box of chocolates. It's on
the web, but you must get a copy for curling up with:

http://www.plantdelights.com/

I will second and third Forestfarm...excellent list; good plants;
good service.

Greer Gardens - especially for Rhododendrons, but a very nice list of
woodies plus perennials - have many plants from them; always sent
large, healthy stock. On the web, catalog available only in .pdf
format...order a paper copy.

Heronswood....probably one of the best known; fat catalog with huge
list of extraordinary plants. I have not ordered from them, but know
many who have. Plants tend to be small, but in many cases they're
the only place you can find it. Dan Hinkley, one of our intrepid
plant explorers, is noted for his plant descriptions and essays. No
color pix. He was recently purchased by Burpee, but I understand his
operation remains essentially as it has been; at least for now...also
on the web:

Gene Bush, a member of this list, puts out a print catalog with
descriptions of the many natives and their relatives for the shady
garden plants he carries in his Munchkin Nursery...but you'll see
color pix and find much more, including a tour of his display and
shade garden on his web site:

Ellen Hornig puts out a spring and fall print catalog for her Seneca
Hill Perennials - lists of marvelous plants; heavy on Arisaema and
Cyclamen - but, again, you will find color pix only on her web site:

http://www.senecahill.com/

Charles and Martha Oliver breed extraordinary lines of Heuchera,
Heucherlla, Tiarella, Asarum and more at their Primrose Path Nursery
in PA. They put out a catalog listing with line drawings and some
color photos, but for more photos, see their website:

http://www.theprimrosepath.com/aboutus.html

Digging Dog Nursery in CA put out a print catalog with nice line
drawings; it's also on the web - they ship lovely plants (at least
those I've gotten). They carry a wide range of perennials and some
woodies - always seem to have a great list of hardy Euphorbias among
other things:

Diana Reeck is another of our intrepid plant explorers with a
reputation as a fantastic plantswoman. Her Collector's Nursery has
received high praise from everyone I've known who has been there or
ordered from her. They do put out a print catalog, but their web
site features plants not listed therein plus photos.

If you are interested in native plants, you must get Woodlander's
list. They have a web presence for sending for their print catalog.
Fantastic list of woody plants and not all are "native".

http://www.woodlanders.net/

Into alpines and other rarities? Siskiyou Rare Plant Nursery has
*finally* put up more than a place holding web site - they also have
a print catalog. One of the most respected names in the business.

http://www.srpn.net/

Barry Yinger, another justly well known for introducing new plants to
US gardens, puts out a catalog for his Asiatica Nursery - rare
plants, especially Arisaema, Asarum, Paeonia and other woodland
lovers....will make you drool and then reel at the prices:)

http://www.asiatica-pa.com/

Avant Gardens in MA has a varied selection of plants from annuals to
woodies tested for vigor in the Northeast...puts out a print catalog
and has everything online:

http://www.avantgardensne.com/

Kim Hawks of Niche Gardens in NC puts out a nice fat catalog of their
mainly native plants...you can also find them online:

http://www.nichegdn.com/

Interested in ferns or Japanese maples? Sue and Harry Olsen of
Foliage Gardens put out a print catalog and have a web site:

http://www.foliagegardens.com/index.html

For seeds, I highly recommend Chilterns in the UK, tho' I do not know
what will happen come Jan. 20, when APHIS in it's idiocy starts
enforcing the phyto requirements for seeds...get your catalog and
order now:

http://www.edirectory.co.uk/chilternseeds/

This is just the tip of the nursery catalog iceberg....happy reading!
