You could use the pre-shelled seed and skip the problem from the beginning.
Expensive maybe at first glance but effective -- and the birds eat the same
amount.
Alternatively, you could set up the feeder over a paved area. This makes it
easier to walk to for maintenance (you can shovel off snow) and avoids
wearing a path in the lawn or through a planting area.
