That's been my hang-up as well. Especially since I quit my day job to write full time. In fact I
would gladly enter the entire Gardening Area of Suite101.com but I don't want to foot the bill
for it, and the home office may not be too ecstatic about shelling out that amount on spec.

Why is the fee that high? What sorts of things does it cover?  I am asking because I've always
heard that as a rule of thumb one should not enter competitions that charge a fee - too often the
"consideration" charged indicates something not quite reputable. I know GWAA is reputable but
that old rule still is a sticking point for me.
