Re: [GWL]: New Garden Globe Awards
Thanks for all the comments, and to Lon for letting the subject of the GWAA
awards get on here. Like Jeff, I find this list more interesting than work,
but I don't get to read daily, so am just catching up on the thread here.
I was the chairman of the awards committee in the 90's, which is a three
year committment at least, including two trips to Washington for the
judging. The fees charged pay for the airfares, hotel, and accomodations for
the judges. They are not paid for their work, nor is the committee, and the
gwaa staff is all there all weekend to facilitate the process.
The judging process is, in my observation, both subjective and objective.
There are scales to use in reviewing the entries, to rank them within a
category, and Jeff is right in saying that each category has standouts, but
the judges are human, so, yes, their reactions to each piece are as
individual as they. Because of the number of entries and the necessity to
have all the judging done at once in one place (except for the trade and
video categories) to be fair to everyone, the judges are overworked in some
categories. I saw them work their tails off to get the job done, but I did
feel that the critiques left alot to be desired. I think this is simply
because of time constraints, not because the judges are anything less than
one would hope for. The process of selecting them is not simple, but does
come down to willingness and availability. I was personally amazed at the
people who said yes - and those who said no!
If an entrant doesn't ask for a critique, the person never knows that a
judge 'liked' their entry or didn't. Personally, I would prefer a
non-judged, critique system from mentors and peers, separate from the award
process (which I would conduct without critique) but have been told just how
impractical that idea is on several occasions.
I am a defender of the process today because I see in the new approach
several of the issues we discussed during my term with the committee being
addressed by Suzi and I know we're in good hands.
Thanks for the interest shown here,
Nellie Neal
