My problem is this: State sponsored Master Gardeners (working for free

Interesting point that Tom raises. Since I wear both hats --- editor and contributor for a weekly Master Gardener column in the local newspaper AND a (just getting started) freelance garden writer --- I can see both sides. Given the mandate and mission of the MG organization, which is to transfer knowledge and educate the home gardener, our columns provide a very useful and well-received service to the community. And, I might add (...modestly!!) that the MG columns each week are better written, better researched and offer a broader range of topics and more in-depth coverage than the rest of the Home and Garden section. Having said that --- it's a double-edged sword. My affiliation with the MG columns precludes me from writing for pay for this newspaper, and so eliminates an otherwise viable opportunity. BTW, Tom, our MG organization does indeed pay honorariums to our speakers in recognition of the axiom --- you generally get what you pay for.
