No question that there is a huge benefit to the publisher.  But there is certainly also benefit to the reader --- given the recent thread (and the reality) about today's newspapers minimizing gardening content, at least a MG-written column does disseminate accurate, community-specific, broader based information than the reader might otherwise get in that publication.
