I think you're absolutely right, Jeff.

But, on the other side of the continuum, doncha think we'll be seeing an
increase in small growers who will be selling plants at both the mega
stores and via specialty shops?

Two straws in the wind:

Many herb and veggie plants are now sold in health food stores, along
with OP vegetable seeds. The suppliers are usually local, smallish
growers, who've carved out a niche market.

A market grower friend of mine has arranged with a local Kroger to sell
plants. She'll be setting up a booth outside the doors, and can sell
anything that does not compete with stuff Kroger already sells. In her
case, she'll be concentrating on heirloom tomato and pepper plants

I believe we'll be seeing much more of this sort of thing in the future.
The possibilities are just to good to ignore. Not only plants, but cut
flowers as well will be sold this way.
