Re: [GWL]: White List
This is serious business as it will for all practical purposes preclude
amateur plant collectors representing the many plant societies in the
USA from collecting new, previously unidentified plant species in
endangered forests. This would effectively end the practice of sending
seeds and plant materials to be preserved as live specimens in a formal
effort to propagate and distribute the plants to their members. I am
sure all can agree that this is preferred to allowing plants to become
extinct.
These new rules represent an international effort in which most major
countries have bought into the premise that all plants NOT on their
white list are dangerous and must be excluded unless proven otherwise. A
very time consuming and expensive process you can be assured.
Transportation of plants invitro has been approved for orchids according
to the Orchid Society. They recognized the problems and had their
representative meeting with the government early in the process so they
were able to obtain some accommodations. I would assume that roses and
other mainstream commercial plants and seeds would still be shipped
internationally per existing rules and regulations. For examples, Dutch
bulbs and plants will still be imported in large quantities for
immediate resale.
Existing university and USDA projects will continue, but efforts to
locate new plants for medical research, food production, etc. will
experience tighter controls and much higher costs to the consumers.
