Do grackles count as raptors? Because once we put in our second, larger pond we not only had all
the song birds but grackles and red winged blackbirds.
Not just a few. There may have been over a thousand. They would start to arrive in great waves
just before sundown. Wave followed wave until it seemed that there couldn't possibly be any more
birds in the world - and that's when another wave would wing its way from the distance.
They would settle in various trees around the property, then rise, circle and settle in different
ones - but eventually they all headed for a wooded area of the yard where they'd stay for the
night.
The ground was white with droppings which, I have read, can carry disease. And in the area where
they spent the night nothing will grow - and all the grass adjoining it has died.
They did this for about three years straight. Last year they must have found a new home.
But judging by the number of feathers I saw scattered everywhere they took some of their smaller
brethren hostage.
The evening show was actually impressive - but the poisoned ground is a dark side.
