[GWL]: Grackles

I have an assignment to do a story on the grackles. So there is interest.

When I lived in the San Antonio, TX area, grackles became such a problem
along the famed Riverwalk that the city sanitation department set out
poisons. In suburban areas, bordered by farm land, the local fire
departments would set off explosions of fireworks (the kind that make big
booms) and/or shoot shotguns loaded with shells filled with rock salt at
dusk to discourage the grackle hoards from landing for the night. Their
feces is nearly pure nitrogen that burns all vegetation. And, they are
prolific poopers. In my own yard, I'd see them swoop down and eat the dry
food out my dog's dish. They love it. On balance, the dog did his job and
scared them off regularly, and they usually nested in an adjacent field or
the neighbor's yard.
