Re: USDA Leafy Greens Proposal
A couple thoughts here. The real problems seem to have occurred with
washed and bagged greens. I don't buy these anymore. I do buy heads
of lettuce, grow most of my own but when I want Romaine I tend to buy
it. If I buy locally I feel very secure but have curiously lost my
appetite for raw spinach.
I'm a little late into this discussion but I thought irradiation of
greens was pretty destructive as far as quality is concerned. Why
aren't we effectively encouraging more people to grow more of their
own greens? We do seem to sell increasing amounts of lettuce and
"greens" seed.
As we better understand the health benefits of salads and greens the
risk to the consume seems to have increased, ironic and frightening.
