Subject: Re: Finding Places To Speak

Sheri,

My 2 cents (where's the cents symbols??) - Raise your base fee; when I
started speaking 25 years ago, my minimum fee was $75. You have to feel
comfortable with a fee and be willing to say "no" if the group is unwilling
to pay (interestingly, I've found that the higher my fee, the more likely
they are hire me. I always am paid for travel (mileage if driving),
airfare, hotel, and meals.

When I started out, I was doing monthly feature gardening articles for
Newsday. At first I was writing about what I knew (and doing lectures at
libraries and botanic gardens all over Long Island). Soon I had to find
other things to write about, and they fed my lecture repertoire.

I also made a brochure (much easier to do on a computer today) with
descriptions of my talks and my vitae and sent them to garden clubs,
libraries, and gardens.

List yourself on the Speakers Bureau on the GWA website.

Good luck!

Cheers,
Cathy
